Costumes
Costumes in horror movies use a vast range of different styles. However, they commonly follow a similar pattern. For example, the costume usually is dark colours which connotes that the person in that costume is the antagonist. In the picture on the right, there is a women in a wedding dress. Because it is black and grey, we know that this is an antagonist.
In this image (left), the character is in a white dress. The colour white signifies purity and innocence. However, there are black stains on the dress which destroys the idea of her being a protagonist because the stains are dark which reflects on what she is like, dark.
The costume of the antagonist can give an audience a way of identifying who the antagonist is. For example, the audience of ‘A Nightmare on Elm Street’ know that Freddy Krueger wears a red and blue striped top and a hat. This is a good because it means that the viewer will get scared just from the sight of a piece of clothing.
For our trailer, we will follow the convention of having the antagonist in dark colours. We can use a black hoodie on backwards with eye holes. This will make the antagonist an unknown spirit which will look like a scary figure.
The costumes of the victims in horror films conventionally follow a casual style which makes the audience think that they are ‘everyday people’. This give the audience the idea that it could be them as the family because they see personal identity (Blumler) in the characters. Furthermore, it increases the levels of verisimilitude of the film because it looks like it could be real life.
Make Up
Make-up of the antagonist is very important in horror films because it must make the audience feel uncomfortable or scared. People use facial expression to communicate which means that the make-up should be able to communicate and to interpolate the viewers to be scared.
In ‘Insidious’, the primary antagonist is described earlier in the film as having a red face. This means that when the audience sees him, they will know exactly who he is (the spirit haunting the boy). The make-up of this character meant the audience could identify who he is and are, therefore, scared of him already.
Some films use masks to create a villain’s face. In ‘Jeepers Creepers’ a mask was used to create the terrifying beast’s face. The masks that are used in films are very high quality so that when being filmed, it looks real. Sometimes the footage needs to be processed further to make the levels of verisimilitude higher.
Because we don’t have access to equipment or software like this, we will need to make sure that the way we make up our antagonist is good enough to look real. This will be very important because the antagonist must be scary for the film to be a success.
The make-up of the protagonists/victims should also be casual, like their costumes. This is, for a similar reason, because the audience needs to relate to the main characters. This will make
By Will Thomasthe audience feel more interpolated with the characters.
